ResuméThe Live Oak (FL) Daily Democrat [LCCN: sn95026788] began publishing in 1906 as a daily (except Sunday) and continued at least into December of 1907. This brief-run title supplemented the weekly edition, the Suwannee Democrat [LCCN: sn95026787], begun in 1884. The Live Oak Daily Democrat, describing itself as a Democratic newspaper, was edited by Charles W. Irwin. Very little is known about Charles W. Irwin. Live Oak is the seat of Suwannee County (FL) government. Suwannee County is surrounded on three sides by the Suwannee River. And, its karst topography gives the area an abundance of natural springs and fresh water. Industries of the region, particularly during the Live Oak Daily Democrat's years of publication, were lumber, turpentine and cotton. Live Oak was known for its grist and lumber mills. The character of these industries and the regional economy survived through the 1920s, when economic down-turn resulted in change. Because of its brief run, these changes cannot be seen in the Live Oak Daily Democrat. Instead, more of the local and rural character of early 20th century Suwannee County and Live Oak in particular is seen in its pages. --E. Kesse, University of Florida Digital Library Center.
